Purpose of the catalogue
The ABGOA Public Domain Literature Library is a curated collection of 100 public-domain works, each accompanied by an editorial reading guide. The guides are intended to help readers approach historical texts with an awareness of their structure, style, and context. They do not replace the originals but offer a pathway into them, highlighting authorial choices and recurring patterns. The catalogue is maintained by the catalogue, and is based in Australia.
Scope and selection
All works in the catalogue are drawn from Project Gutenberg and are in the public domain. The selection Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context. Books were chosen for their literary or scientific interest and for the richness of their prose. The catalogue does not aim to be comprehensive but to offer a representative sample of genres within its scope.
Source attribution
Every book record includes the digital source (Project Gutenberg) and a link to the original source. The catalogue metadata, including author names and keywords, is taken directly from Project Gutenberg records. Editorial notes are original and attributed to ABGOA Catalogue.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes the title, author(s) with lifespan dates, publisher, Library of Congress subject keywords, a target reader field, and a catalogue note. The target reader field is typically 'Readers of public-domain and historical texts' and should not be interpreted as a strict audience restriction. The catalogue note summarizes the editorial approach and key features of the work.
Category assignment
Works are assigned to one of four categories based on subject matter and approach. Category boundaries are flexible; many works could fit multiple categories. The category guides explain the reasoning behind each grouping and acknowledge limitations. Categories are not definitive literary judgments but navigation aids.
Editorial reading context
Editorial notes are based on close reading of the original texts. They focus on authorial choices in diction, dialogue, description, and structure. The notes do not claim to be exhaustive or to represent the only valid interpretation. They are intended to prompt readers to notice elements they might otherwise overlook.
Edition facts and text measurements
Where relevant, editorial notes may include information about the edition used, such as publication date and illustrator. Text measurements such as word counts or structural divisions are noted when they illuminate the work's organization. These facts are derived from the Project Gutenberg e-text and cross-checked where possible.
Recommendations and related works
Each category guide recommends three books to start with. These are chosen to showcase the range of the category and to provide contrasting reading experiences. Recommendations are based on the editorial reading of the works and are not ranked by quality. Related works are sometimes suggested within guides or catalogue notes.
Corrections and reader reports
Readers who notice errors in the catalogue or editorial notes are invited to contact the catalogue project via the site's contact page. Corrections will be reviewed and implemented as resources allow. The catalogue is maintained voluntarily and may contain imperfections.

Ongoing maintenance
